TOUR 1

Burren Coast and Dolmon Tour.

Tour 1 takes you out of Doolin along the Burren Way (R479) heading towards Ballyvaughan. After driving just over two miles, this road ends at the entrance to Ballinalackin Castle. At Ballinalackin Castle turn left and follow the Coast Road (R477) to Ballyvaughan. At Ballyvaughan head south on N67 but only for about a mile. Turn left (south) onto R480. Follow R480 to its end and turn right, (west) onto R476. This will bring you to Kilfenora and on to Lisdoonvarna. One mile past Lisdoonvarna, R476 becomes R478. 3kms will bring you to R479and a sign for Doolin. Turn right, (north) onto R479 to return to Doolin.

The scenic coast road drive has dramatic views of the Aran Islands and Galway Bay to the north and the barren rock of the Burren to the south. Stop at Fanore beach, a beautiful stretch of sand dunes and surf. Blackhead lighthouse is the northernmost point on the coast drive. Ballyvaughan is a small village at the mouth of a protected bay. On R480, watch for Poulnabrone dolmen (sign posted). Erected nearly 6000 years ago, it was excavated in 1986 by the Office of Public Works. Remains of 16 - 22 adults and six children were found. It is said to be the largest example of its kind in Europe. At the end of R480 is Lemenagh Castle. An O’Brien castle, its main tower dates from 1480. Although in ruins, it is still five stories high in places. Turning right onto R476 you’ll arrive in Kilfenora, home to an excellent Interpretive Centre, covering all aspects of the Burren. From Kilfenora, continue west on R476 to Lisdoonvarna and on to Doolin.
