TOUR 4
Day trip to Galway.
Travel inland from Doolin along the R478 to Lisdoonvarna. Travel through Lisdoonvarna and follow signs
for Ballyvaughan, (N67). Follow the N67 to Kilcogan. At Kilcolgan take a left on N18 and follow this
road until you see signs for Galway city center. Galway can satisfy all of your shopping needs. On your
return journey back to Doolin retrace your steps back to Kilcolgan. Turn right onto the N67. Follow this
until you come to Ballyvaghan again. At Ballyvaughan, instead of turning left at the center to return
inland by Lisdoonvarna, turn right to return via the coast road, (R477). On this route you will pass Black
Head, the long sandy beach at Fanore and the barren, rocky Burren landscape. At Ballinalackin Castle turn
right onto R479 and down to Doolin.
Galway is a beautiful bustling city which has managed to retain its old world charm.. It has grown in recent
years with the development of third level institutions in the city. Galway has a vast number of shops and
chain stores to cater for every need. From high street labels and brand names to simple souvenirs, Galway
has it all.. Galway is known as the City of the Tribes. It had strong fighting and warrior ties in medieval
times. This is still evident with historical ruins of castles and the structure of the street system within
the city.
Ballyvaughan is a prosperous fishing and tourist village just past Black Head in north Clare. In recent year,
Ballyvaughan has grown to cater for the thousands of visitors that pass through it each year. It is a working,
fishing port in the summer and offers much needed shelter from the raging Atlantic in the winter. In the
summer, its small pier becomes the centre of attention with fishing and pleasure boats alike.
