TOUR 5

Tour of the Eastern Burren.

Travel inland from Doolin on the R478 to Lisdoonvarna. Just before Lisdoonvarna the R478 becomes R476. Four miles past Lisdoonvarna, you will come to the small village of Kilfenora. From Kilfenora follow signs for Corofin along the same R476. Corofin is more inland and is still in the Burren region. In Corofin, take R460 heading for Gort. Returming from Gort, retrace your steps. At Kilmacduagh, head north until you eventually find N67. Turn left (south). You are now travelling towards Ballyvaughan. At Ballyvaughan. Continue on the N67 to Lisdoonvarna and then on to Doolin or take the coast road, (R477) to R479 at Ballinalackin Castle. Turn right here to return to Doolin.

This route brings you through the eastern Burren region. You’ll pass by Lisdoonvarna, a spa town and travel on to Kilfenora.. In the centre of Corofin, find R460 that leads out of the village to the east. After a few miles you’ll see Mullaghmore mountain to the left. The mountain has been pushed up from the surrounding plateau in gentle folds giving it its unique appearance. Although plans for an interpretive centre here have been abandoned, you can still walk around Mullaghmore on the many narrow roads that skirt it. Further on you’ll drive beside the shores of Lough Bunny. Here you’ll find a picnic area. The lake attracts dozens of bird and butterfly species and the patient fisherman can catch perch, rudd and pike.

Further on, also on the left, you’ll pass Kilmacduagh Monastery founded in the 7th C. by St. Colman. As well as several ruined churches, there is a well-preserved round tower (it leans ½ metre from vertical). Outside Gort, is Coole Park, former home of Lady Gregory, founder and director of the Abbey Theatre and friend of William Butler Yates. The house no longer stands; the estate is now a wildlife park. The garden of the house, with its’ yew walk and autograph tree which includes signatures of Goerge Bernard Shaw, Sean O’Casey, John Millington Synge and Douglas Hyde, first president of Ireland, still remains.

To return to Doolin, retrace your drive to Kilmacduagh Monastery. Take the road there to the north. (If you miss this right, there is another chance to go north at Lough Bunny.) Either road leads eventually to N67. Turn left on N67 and head back to Ballyvaughan. Here you can decide to continue on N67 to Lisdoonvarna and Doolin or take the coast road home to Doolin.
