The Atlantic Ocean is at the heart of Doolin.

The ocean is integral to the community here, and is used for many day to day activities uses including fishing and travel, as well as the pursuit of pastimes including swimming, surfing, sailing and kayaking.

The Ocean covers approximately one fifth of the earth’s surface, and is second only in size to the Pacific Ocean. Equally, it dominates the entire western and southern Irish coastline.

The Wild Atlantic Way stretches 2,500km from Malin Head in the north to Kinsale Harbour in Co. Cork, and pinpoints the incredible natural beauty to be seen on the west coast of Ireland.

Highlights include rugged coastlines where the sea has carved into the limestone, beautiful untouched beaches perfect for surfing and other water pursuits, charming seafront villages where you can dine on fish caught from the Ocean just hours before and magnificent heritage sites such as Cliffs of Moher, one of the country’s top attractions – the Wild Atlantic Way is an experience like no other.

Doolin, perfectly located to explore the Atlantic

Doolin is ideally located on the Wild Atlantic Way, adjacent to the Cliffs of Moher, as a base between Galway and Clare to follow the Atlantic Way.

On a clear day, on the Cliffs of Moher, the view is panoramic – you can see the Aran Islands, Galway Bay, the Twelve Pins and the Maum Turk mountains in Connemara as well as the Dingle Peninsula and Blasket Islands in Kerry.

The sea is a source of life here, the sea breeze can lift the soul and soothes it. It certainly helps to grow your appetite and it is often said that you sleep more soundly after a day breathing in the clean crisp sea air!

No matter what your interest or adrenaline level, there is a way for you to experience the Atlantic Ocean like a local during your stay in Doolin!

A visit to Doolin is not complete without taking to the sea, be it on a cruise around the Cliffs of Moher, or a visit to the Aran Islands, or surfing in nearby Lahinch (or learning how to!), or sea kayaking, taking a coastal walk or simply having a swim!
